Andrew Symonds has spoken up about the end of his friendship with Michael Clarke, admitting that money may have played a role in their fall.
When the two Australian cricket heroes first began playing for the national team alongside, they were great friends, but as Symonds’ career came to an end and Clarke’s status increased toward ultimately being Test captain, their friendship collapsed.

Clarke may have been jealous of Symonds when the all-rounder was a highly sought-after player at the rise of the lucrative Indian Premier League, according to Symonds on The Brett Lee Podcast.
Andrew Symonds, a big-hitting batsman and great fielder who could also deliver pace and spin, was the ideal T20 cricketer, and he became the most valuable overseas player at the first IPL auction, selling for $1.8 million to the Deccan Chargers.
“We grew close.” “I used to bat with him a lot when he (Clarke) got into the side,” Symonds told Lee.
“So when he arrived on the side, I took special care of him.” This helped to form a bond.

Matthew Hayden stated to me — that when the IPL launched, I got a big penny to go and play in the IPL — and he recognized jealousy as a factor in the relationship (with Clarke).
“Money has a curious way of doing things. It’s a good thing, but it can also be poisonous, and I believe it harmed our relationship.”
“I have enough respect for him that I won’t go into too much detail about what he said.”
“I’m fine with the fact that my friendship with him is over, but I’m not going to sit here and start flinging mud.”
Clarke was standing in for Ricky Ponting as captain, Symonds felt disappointed when he was sent home from a one-day series for missing a team meeting to go fishing.
Both made their Test debuts for Australia in 2004 and spent years playing together for the national team in both the short and long formats of the game.
