Former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist definitely knows a thing or two about winning the ODI World Cup. The Australia great played three ODI World Cups in his illustrious career and won all of them. Adam Gilchrist was a key member of the Australian team in all three editions.

And as India look to win the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023, Adam Gilchrist has a valuable piece of advice for them. The former cricketer had advised the Indian team to talk to the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, and MS Dhoni and pick their brains. Tendulkar, Yuvraj, and Dhoni starred in India’s victorious campaign at the 2011 World Cup.

Tendulkar finished the competition as the highest run-scorer while Yuvraj was the Player of the Tournament. MS Dhoni, on the other hand, was the captain of the side and had played an unbeaten knock of 91 in the final. India became the first team to win the World Cup on home soil. They will now be desperate to replicate that feat in the forthcoming edition.

Adam Gilchrist’s advice for Team India:

While Team India have done consistently well in bilateral assignments in recent years, they have failed to replicate those performances in ICC competitions, especially in knockout games. In the last two editions of the ODI World Cup, the Men in Blue crashed out at the semifinal stage.

“I can’t claim to know what it is like to be an Indian player, playing in India (laughs). It’s always intriguing. If I would be in the Indian hierarchy, I would be tapping into guys like Sachin (Tendulkar), MS (Dhoni) to come in and spend time with the group if they are available, and pass on all their experience. I would have tried to get guys like Yuvraj (Singh), who had so much going on in his life during that 2011 tournament, and ask them to speak openly about it,” Adam Gilchrist told Sportstar.

“Virat, obviously, was part of that team without being a feature member of the team at that time. I would be drawing on that experience of playing a home World Cup and try to find out how they did it. If you can keep that external noise quiet, it allows you to play your best cricket,” Adam Gilchrist added.

The World Cup is scheduled to be played from October 5 to November 19. India are gearing up to host the competition alone for the first time. Team India will open their campaign on October 8 when they take on Australia in Chennai.

Before the World Cup, India and Australia are also scheduled to play a three-match ODI series. The series is scheduled to begin on September 22. It will give both teams the perfect opportunity to finetune their preparations for the World Cup.
