Former Sri Lanka captain Aravinda de Silva has called for strict action against the trio that found themselves under the spotlight for wrong reasons in the recent England tour. Kusal Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka had breached the COVID-19 bio-bubble even as Sri Lanka struggled with their on-field performances. Aravinda de Silva believes that harsh punishment is a must for them to learn a lesson.
Kusal Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka breaching the bio-bubble after a 3-0 whitewash in the T20Is led to harsh consequences. The trio returned home from England immediately and reports suggested that they could face a ban of nearly a year. Furthermore, Sri Lanka ended the tour winless in five games, with the third ODI abandoned due to persistent rains.
Aravinda de Silva remarked that the trio have had bad records earlier in their career, too, and a suitable punishment then would not have led to the present situation. The former Sri Lanka chief selector feels that they must be dealt with strictly to avoid any such circumstances in the future.
“These three players have had bad records earlier in their career. If we had given the suitable punishment at that time they would have not repeated this type of mistake. If we cannot give them the suitable punishment, they will never learn a lesson from this incident,” De Silva said as quoted by daily news.lk.
They should realise their responsibility and represent the country: Aravinda de Silva
Aravinda de Silva further stated that players need to realize their wrongdoings or the fault committed off the field. The 55-year old underlined that players have responsibilities towards their country and are required to understand how to stay within the bio-bubble.
“They should have realised their misbehaviour and especially what was the fault they have done off the field. They should realise their responsibility and represent the country. When a bio-bubble is created they have to live according to the rules and regulations,” he added.
