Young Australian off-spinner Todd Murphy stated that he is eagerly looking forward to playing his first Test match in English conditions. Todd Murphy said that he has grown up watching Ashes cricket and expressed his admiration for the Barmy Army, the passionate England supporters.

Nathan Lyon was ruled out of the remaining three Tests of the ongoing Ashes series due to injury. Todd Murphy is expected to be included in the Australian playing XI in place of the injured Lyon for the third Test, which is scheduled to be played at Headingley in Leeds, starting on Thursday, July 6.

Love What The Barmy Army Bring To The Game – Todd Murphy

Ahead of the third Test between England and Australia, Todd Murphy recalled his debut match against India in the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series earlier this year.

“I think this might be a bit different to the Indian crowd. They made a lot of noise, but they were all quite friendly,” Murphy said ahead of Australia’s major pre-Test training at Headingley yesterday as quoted by cricket.com.au.

“From speaking to the boys, this is probably the most hostile ground you get in England and I am quite looking forward to it if I do get the opportunity. I have grown up watching Ashes cricket and love what the Barmy Army bring to the game.

“It obviously adds to the atmosphere and adds to an away series, so it is going to be different and I am sure they would not hold back. I will just embrace it and try and have a good time with it,” he concluded.

The 22-year-old impressed with his bowling in his debut series against India. He registered bowling figures of 7/124 in the first Test match of the BGT 2023 in Nagpur. He became the youngest Australian player to pick up a maiden five-wicket haul in the longer format of the game.

Todd Murphy’s initial plan to play for Durham and gain experience in English conditions before the Ashes series was delayed due to soreness and the need for rest. He later intended to join the county team between the third and fourth Tests but his scheduled flight was cancelled.
