Ashes 2023: "I'd Go Back And Start My Captaincy The Way Ben Has" - Joe Root Backs Ben Stokes Aggressive Approach

Ace England batter Joe Root expressed his support for Ben Stokes’ aggressive style of captaincy, claiming it has brought about a revolution in the longer format of the game. Joe Root wished that he had adopted a similar fearless approach during his tenure as captain of the national side.
The England team managed to win only one of their last 17 Test matches before Ben Stokes took charge as skipper. The all-rounder was named Joe Root’s successor in red-ball cricket in June 2022. The team won 11 out of 14 Tests under the partnership of Stokes and Brendon McCullum.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Joe Root praised Stokes’ leadership and said that the team achieved a lot of success under his captaincy.
“If I could go back in time, I’d go back and start my captaincy the way Ben has and try to get us to play in a similar manner to how he does it. It’s far more exciting, it’s far more interesting, and I think we’re getting far more out of our team and our individuals,” Root said.
“We’re playing better cricket to watch, we’re producing better results overall. And if we are going to grow as a team, we can’t just look at a game like that, with a couple of moments that went against us, and say: ‘We need to go about things differently’,” he added.

We Get Those One Percenters Right At Lord’s – Joe Root
The former England skipper pointed out that that team played competitive cricket throughout the five days and hoped to bounce back in the second Test of the series.
“If anything we need to double down on the way we’re doing it, completely back ourselves, and make sure we get those one percenters right at Lord’s,” he further stated.
“That’s what the exciting thing is, we feel like we ran that game for five days and we might be on the wrong end of it but we’ve still got nowhere near the perfect game. There’s still so much more in that dressing room to get excited about,” he concluded.
The Ben Stokes-led team will take on the Pat Cummins-led team in the second Test of the five-match series at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London starting on June 28.
