Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes England’s batters’ approach against veteran Australian spinner Nathan Lyon will decide the outcome of the first Test of the Ashes 2023. Michael Vaughan feels that the team need to score more than 250 runs in their second innings of the match.
The Ben Stokes-led team bundled out the opposition for 386 runs in their first innings and managed to get a lead of 7 runs. English bowlers picked up Australia’s last five wickets for just 48 runs in the first session of Day 3. Usman Khawaja was dismissed for 141 runs, adding 15 runs to his overnight score.

Speaking to BBC Sports, Michael Vaughan said that he was impressed with England pacer’s short-ball tactics against the Australian tailenders.
“I’d rather be in England’s position. This Bazball approach against a world-class performer in Nathan Lyon. There has also been a little bit more for the seamers. The key is how England plays Lyon. If they get over 250 it will be a very hard chase for Australia,” Vaughan said.
“Broad, Anderson and Robinson have brought England back into the contest. There was a stage earlier this morning where Australia were well on their way to a 50-60 run lead,” he added.

It Would Make England Very Favourable – Alastair Cook
During the same discussion, former England opener Alastair Cook said that the Ben Stokes-led team should score around 300 runs to become favourites to win the match.
“I think 270, England would snap your hand off for it. I think that gives you a really good chance. If you could push to 300, 320 for a fourth innings on a wearing wicket, it would make England very favourable,” Cook said.
England lost their openers for a low score in their second innings of the match. The hosts scored 28 runs for the loss of two wickets before rain intervened. The home team ended the day’s play with Ollie Pope and Joe Root remaining unbeaten at the crease.
