Veteran batter Joe Root opened up about his role in the England Test team for the much-anticipated five-match Ashes 2023 series against Australia at home. Joe Root said that he is happy to assist skipper Ben Stokes with the bat in the upcoming marquee event.

Joe Root gave up the captaincy following a series loss against the West Indies in 2021. All-rounder Ben Stokes took charge as captain of the team with Brendon McCullum as the new coach. Stokes led the team to 11 victories out of 13 matches as a permanent skipper.

Joe Root said that he is looking forward to playing as a senior batter in the team, as it is an opportunity to stand up and play well in big series.

“It’s going to be nice to just go and play the game and try and assist where I can for Ben and for the other guys around. Play a slightly different senior role in the team,” Root said.

He’s Doing A Far Better Job Than I Did – Joe Root

Joe Root lauded Ben Stokes’ captaincy and said that he is doing a better job than he did as the captain of the national team.

“I think my batting has been fine for a while, but mentally, just to be able to just turn up and play and have fun. Just chat batting with some of the younger guys,” he further added.

“Ben knows what he’s doing. He’s got enough behind him now to give himself the encouragement and confidence to make those big calls on his own, as you’d expect him to anyway. He’s doing a far better job than I did,” he concluded.

England will host the Ashes series, with the first Test scheduled to begin on June 16 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The second test will be held at Lord’s Cricket Ground, the third at Headingley in Leeds, the fourth at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester, and the final match at Kennington Oval in London.
