Marnus Labuschagne has established himself as one of the top batsmen in the world, and his remarkable work ethic is one of the main reasons for his success. Labuschagne is constantly working on his game, as former Australian cricketer and Australian assistant coach Michael Di Venuto stated. He is continuously working to develop his technique and mental discipline in order to become the best player he can be.
The second Test at Lord’s will be Labuschagne’s return to the site where his career took off in 2019 after he came in as Smith’s concussion replacement. Since then, he has been productive, collecting 10 Test hundreds with an average that has topped 60 several times, however, he is currently in a slump, with two half-centuries and an average of 33.14 in his previous 17 innings.

The Australian team’s coaches are optimistic that Marnus Labuschagne’s technical concerns have already been resolved and are certain that his twin failure to Stuart Broad’s outswingers was an isolated incident.

In the inaugural Ashes Test, Broad nearly identically caught Marnus Labuschagne behind twice while he was playing at balls well outside of the stumps for a first-ball duck and 13.

His difficulties coincided with Steve Smith’s two failures in the victory at Edgbaston; the pair’s combined contribution, at 35, was their lowest in a game in which they both batted twice. In a session originally intended for reserve players, the duo returned to training on Saturday and batted for nearly two hours before the start of the second Test at Lord’s on Wednesday.
Marnus Labuschagne is always fidgeting around with different things technically” – Michael Di Venuto
Australian assistant coach Michael Di Venuto stated that Marnus Labuschagne’s preparation in the nets was not particular to face Broad. He said that any tweaking is initiated by Labuschagne in cooperation with D’Costa, who shares ideas with the Australian staff.
“What happened in the first Test, I hadn’t seen that (before), And it certainly didn’t happen the week before at The Oval (in the World Test Championship final). Whatever it was, hopefully, it was brief and he can get back to normal this week. It was pretty much normal (in training on Saturday). And that is all we have seen in the nets in the build-up as well. It can be a bit strange, sometimes things happen in the game. He nicked two balls he normally leaves quite regularly. Hopefully, he bounces back this week,” Michael Di Venuto said to CODE Sports.
“Marnus is always working on his game,” he said. “You have all seen him train before, he is meticulous in how he goes about his preparation. He is always fidgeting around with different things technically. That is all pretty normal for Marn.Marnus Labuschagne is his best coach. The same as Smudge [Smith]. They are their own best coaches. They are great problem solvers, and that is why they have been such great players for Australia for a period of time,” Michael Di Venuto added.
