Former Australian captain Allan Border believes that age could be a factor in veteran opener David Warner’s recent failures in the longer format of the game. Allan Border pointed out that David Warner didn’t move his foot in Australia’s first innings in the ongoing Ashes series in England.

David Warner was dismissed for just nine runs in Australia’s first innings at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Stuart Broad got Warner’s wicket for the first time in red-ball cricket. The Pat Cummins-led team managed to score 386 in their first innings and conceded a lead of seven runs to the opposition.

His Feet Aren’t Moving As They Should Be – Allan Border

During an interaction on SEN Breakfast, Allan Border failed to carry his form from the recently concluded WTC final match into the first match of Ashes 2023.

“He has got a bit of a hangup about Broad. I don’t know what it is, I haven’t really talked to him about it. When you have gotten out 15 times in Test cricket, that’s a bit of a worry. Father time does catch up with you as we all know,” Border stated.

“I thought his innings in the World Test Championship final in the first innings, he had started to get his feet moving, he looked really good and made 40-odd, but from there he has just sort of gone back into his old habits where his feet aren’t moving as they should be,” he added.

David Warner played a gritty knock of 43 runs off 60 balls in Australia’s first WTC final innings against Indian bowlers. The left-handed batter batted well on a green top with overcast conditions. However, the Southpaw managed to score only one run in the second innings of the match.

He Can Make Some Runs In The Second Innings – Allan Border

Allan Border expressed hope that David Warner could score runs in Australia’s second innings and help his team win the match.

“I have just got my fingers crossed that he can make some runs in the second innings, maybe take Australia to a win or something like that, and all of a sudden he just springs back to life and he has a great Ashes series but just at the moment, he is looking very vulnerable, isn’t he?” he concluded.

The Ben Stokes-led team finished with 28 runs for the loss of two wickets at the stumps of Day 3. The England team had an overall lead of 35 runs, with Ollie Pope and Joe Root remaining unbeaten at the crease. Skipper Pat Cummins and Scott Boland picked up one wicket each in England’s second innings.
