Former England captain Nasser Hussain opened up about wicketkeeper batter Jonny Bairstow’s poor outing behind the stumps in the first Test of the ongoing Ashes series. Nasser Hussain pointed out that Jonny Bairstow deserves to be in the playing XI because of his batting performances.

Jonny Bairstow missed a few stumpings and catches in the series opener at Edgbaston in Birmingham. However, the right-handed batter scored 78 runs in England’s first innings of the first Test. Bairstow’s missed chances proved costly at the end for his team, as they suffered a two-wicket loss.

Nasser Hussain highlighted that Ben Foakes doesn’t fit in the playing XI for the second Test match, given that the middle order is filled with in-form batters.

“Jonny had a poor game with the gloves but did take a great catch to dismiss Marnus Labuschagne in the first innings,” Nasser Hussain said.

“He has to keep on playing because of the way he bats. So who are you going to get Foakes in for? Open with someone who doesn’t want to do it or has never done it before?” he added.

I’d Probably Go Four Seamers And Root’s Spin – Nasser Hussain

The cricketer-turned-commentator believes that England is likely to field with four seamers in the bowling line-up for the second Test. Hussain lauded Moeen Ali’s efforts with both bat and ball in the series opener.

“Yes, Mo’s finger injury was hugely costly, particularly with all those left-handers in the Australia side on a turning pitch. He battled hard and bowled pretty well but England cannot go in again with their fingers crossed he will be OK. I haven’t seen the pitch but at Lord’s I’d probably go four seamers and Root’s spin,” he further stated.

They Can’t Be Sloppy And Make More Mistakes – Nasser Hussain

Nasser Hussain reiterated his prediction that England will win the Ashes 2023 series 3-2 despite the hosts losing the first match.

“I said 3-2 but I wasn’t sure which way it would go and I’m still not sure. I’ll still go 3-2 England but they can’t be sloppy and make more mistakes,” he concluded.
