Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez has reportedly declined the offer to become Pakistan’s chief selector. Recent reports suggested that the former all-rounder was the front-runner to take the role.
Earlier this year in January, the Pakistan Cricket Board under the leadership of Najam Sethi appointed Haroon Rasheed as the chief selector. Rasheed took over from former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, who served as the interim chief selector.
Rasheed, however, has been removed from the post by the new PCB leadership under President Zaka Ashraf. A recent report stated that PCB had recently approached Mohammad Hafeez and Rashid Latif for the role. The report also stated that Ashraf preferred Mohammad Hafeez as the chief selector while Latif declined the offer.
Mohammad Hafeez says no to PCB:
According to Cricket Pakistan, Mohammad Hafeez has no plans of becoming Pakistan’s new chief selector as PCB continue their search for Rasheed’s replacement. The report stated that the PCB held discussions with Mohammad Hafeez in the past few days but the former cricketer has expressed his desire to work at the grassroots level instead.
Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Moin Khan was also an option for the PCB. The former cricketer, however, is reluctant to accept the proposal due to concerns over his son Azam Khan’s career. Moin is apprehensive that his son’s performance may come under unnecessary pressure if he takes up the position.
Mohammad Hafeez’s decision is a major blow to PCB. With the Asia Cup and the World Cup not very far away, they would have liked to appoint the chief selector as soon as possible. With Hafeez declining, the search is only going to be extended.
