Legendary batsman Virender Sehwag has opened up on the fierce rivalry between Team India and Pakistan as both teams gear up for their meeting in the upcoming Asia Cup and the World Cup.
Almost a year after the iconic game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the T20 World Cup, the arch-rivals will lock horns against each other again on September 2 in the forthcoming Asia Cup. India and Pakistan are clubbed together with Asia Cup debutants Nepal in Group A.
On the other hand, reigning champions Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh are in Group B. Asia Cup 2023 is scheduled to be played from August 30 while the final is on September 17. Pakistan will be hosting four games in the tournament while the remaining nine matches will be held in Sri Lanka.
Virender Sehwag on India-Pakistan rivalry:
With not much time left before the much-awaited match between India and Pakistan match takes place in the Asia Cup, Virender Sehwag spoke on the famous rivalry between the two nations. The former India skipper has ample experience of the fierce rivalry as a player.
He played 9 Tests, 31 ODIs, and 2 T20Is against Pakistan. The former cricketer scored over 2,000 runs against the arch-rivals across formats with the help of 6 centuries and eight half-centuries. Virender Sehwag also smashed a Test triple century against Pakistan in their own backyard.
“The India-Pakistan rivalry has always been good and competitive. Everyone eagerly awaits this game, whether they are Indian fans, Pakistani fans, or fans from around the world. The India-Pakistan rivalry is similar to the rivalry between England and Australia,” Virender Sehwag told Star Sports.
“Both the teams have a common language that is Hindi. It takes the sledging to a different level and we cannot share it on TV,” he added.
Speaking further, Virender Sehwag proceeded to share the famous banter between him and Shoaib Akhtar that took place during India’s tour of Pakistan in the 2003/04 season. After Akhtar kept asking Virender Sehwag to play hook shots against him, the latter advised the former Pakistan speedster to bowl bouncers to the man standing at the non-striker’s end who was none other than the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
