Former Indian selector Devang Gandhi has identified and backed Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill for the vice-captaincy role in the T20I side ahead of the team selections for the Asia Cup 2025.
There has been immense buzz surrounding the appointment of Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill in the role of India's captain or vice-captain for the shortest format of the game, ahead of the multi-team continental championship. However, Suryakumar's recovery has cut short Shubman's captaincy hopes.
After the T20 World Cup triumph and Rohit Sharma's retirement announcement, India appointed Suryakumar Yadav as the skipper of the T20I side, since they needed a regular player in the role who is unaffected by injuries as well as performance snubs.
Shubman Gill picked as vice-captain by former selector ahead of the Asia Cup 2025
Shubman Gill, the batter, last played for India in the shortest format back in the Sri Lanka series in 2024. But he was not part of India's T20I squad in the Bangladesh, South Africa, and England series, which followed the Sri Lanka series.
The 25-year-old has, however, been impressed with his performance in the IPL as the skipper and batter for Gujarat Titans, but had the IPL been considered for an India comeback, then Sai Sudharsan would have been cited as a deserving debutant.
As of now, former Indian selector Devang Gandhi has named Shubman Gill as the most ideal player in the role of vice-captain for the Indian team going into the Asia Cup, since SKY is expected to return as the skipper.
“Don’t forget that he was not dropped when India was playing T20 cricket in South Africa towards the end of the year, a series India won 3-1. He was rested after the New Zealand series in India as the team was about to embark on the tour of Australia, and after his immense success in the IPL as a player and captain, everything suggests he should be the vice-captain in the Asia Cup," says Gandhi.
Former Players have contrasting views on Shubman Gill's appointment
Several former players have also stepped up to name their playing XI and predict the squad for the Asia Cup 2025, since the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is yet to announce the squads on the 19th or 20th of August.
Though Shubman Gill's comeback into the side has been under the buzz, and his return as the vice-captain of the white-ball side is also under speculation, former teammates Mohammed Kaif and Harbhajan Singh have contrasting views on the youngster's return ahead of the Asia Cup 2025.
Former spinner and Gill's teammate in KKR, Harbhajan Singh, has recognized Gill in his playing XI for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, while Mohammed Kaif has left out Gill from his playing XI but has kept him in the squad.
Gautam Gambhir wants one captain across all formats
Indian coach Gautam Gambhir has never been barred from voicing his thoughts, and his audacious remarks have sometimes landed him in controversy. However, Gambhir has been clear on one stance since day one, as he seeks a one-captain dominance across all formats.
India currently has three different skippers in the three formats, with Suryakumar in T20s, Rohit Sharma in ODIs, and Shubman Gill in T20s. As a result of these remarks, it has been on the buzz that Gambhir is trying to bring in Shubman Gill as India's ODI skipper, replacing Rohit Sharma.
