Team India Test captain Shubman Gill is uncertain for selection in the 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, set to begin on September 9. According to a recent report by the Indian Express, the team management and the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee feel Gill does not fit into their T20 plans.

Shubman Gill made an impressive debut as India’s Test captain in England, guiding a young side to a 2-2 draw. However, success may not impact the Asia Cup T20I selection. Experts had speculated he could return to T20Is or even lead the shortest format, but the selectors chose not to mix formats for selection.

Shubman Gill Unlikely to Be Part of India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad

According to the Indian Express, Shubman Gill is unlikely to be part of India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad, starting on September 9. There had been a "series of informal talks" over Gill's inclusion ahead of the August 19 selection meeting in Mumbai.

However, with Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma performing well at the top order, the management is reluctant to break the current setup or pick Gill as a backup. Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead the team after clearing his fitness test.

“If Gill is included then he will straight away bat at the top and if he doesn’t get a game then there is no point in having him. At the same time it will be unfair on Sanju, who did well in the past. If Gill gets in then Sanju might have to miss out and Jitesh might get a game," The Indian Express quoted a BCCI source as saying.

Shubman Gill Takes Over as India’s Test Captain

Shubman Gill became India’s Test captain for the England tour after Rohit Sharma’s retirement. The right-handed batter scored 754 runs in five matches at an average of 75.40, including four centuries and a career-best 269. He also broke multiple batting records.

The 25-year-old made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka in January 2023. He has played 21 matches, scoring 578 runs at an average of 30.42 with a strike rate of 139.27. He has smashed one century and three fifties, with a highest score of 126* against New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

Earlier in 2025, Gill amassed 650 runs in the IPL for the Gujarat Titans (GT) at a strike rate of 155.71. He finished as the fourth-highest run-scorer of the season behind Sai Sudharsan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Virat Kohli. The Ahmedabad-based team lost to the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Eliminator.

India stick with Tilak Varma for Asia Cup 2025

The Indian team management and selectors have decided against picking Shubman Gill ahead of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was part of the 2024 T20 World Cup. With Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson performing well at the top, the openers’ positions are secure.

There were discussions about dropping Tilak Varma to accommodate Shubman Gill, but the management felt it was unfair. Varma is currently ranked No. 2 in the ICC T20I batting rankings and has delivered impressive performances, including consecutive centuries in South Africa.

The final squad decision will be made after a meeting with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia on August 19. Ajit Agarkar will announce the Asia Cup squad.
