Suryakumar Yadav got an opportunity to impress the team management in the ODIs when he was named in India’s playing eleven for the Super 4 clash against Bangladesh in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023.
With a place in the final already secured, Team India made as many as five changes to the playing eleven. Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kuldeep Yadav were rested for the game on Friday (September 17). They were replaced by Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, and Prasidh Krishna.
Talking about Suryakumar Yadav’s performance, the batsman once again failed to make his chances count in the 50-over format. The right-handed batsman scored 26 runs off 34 balls and was clean-bowled by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan. With a well-set Shubman Gill doing well at one end, the right-handed batsman had the opportunity to bail India out of trouble but he failed.
Deep Dasgupta on Suryakumar Yadav’s performance:
With Suryakumar Yadav squandering yet another opportunity in the ODIs, former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta was critical of him. The former cricketer-turned-commentator said that the innings from the middle-order batsman were strange. Dasgupta expressed his surprise over Suryakumar Yadav not wanting to play his usual game against the spinners.
“It was very strange for me, because it seemed like that the only shot that he wanted to play was a sweep. I mean we have generally seen him being so good against the spinners, going over extra cover, mid-off, he has other options.
“It was such a strange innings because all he wanted to do was sweep. I can understand that he is struggling. I can understand when you go out there, you connect a few and you feel confident. He was struggling to play that shot and he still went for it anyway,” Deep Dasgupta said on Star Sports after the match.
Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden was also a part of the discussion panel and he too commented on Suryakumar Yadav’s batting. The Australia great opined that while the India batsman is desperate to do well in ODIs, he is yet to decode his role in the 50-over format.
“I really understand the mindset, because I had 7 years sitting in the nets not getting a game for Australia, and you have these moments where you perform incredibly well for your states and in Suryakumar Yadav’s case – in first-class cricket and in the IPL where his strike rate is 170+. When it comes to the ODI format, he has not quite found, or decoded what sort of player he is going to be,” said Matthew Hayden during the same discussion.
Talking about the game, Bangladesh beat India by 6 runs to bow out of the Asia Cup on a high. India will now take on Sri Lanka in the final on Sunday (September 17).
