The veteran India National Cricket Team left-handed opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan has opened up on being ignored for the upcoming Asian Games 2023, which will take place in China from September 23 to October 8.

As the Asian Games will clash with the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to send its second-string side for the tournament. A young squad has been named for the tournament that will be led by star batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Meanwhile, Shikhar Dhawan has said that he was left shocked after his non-selection for the Asian Games. However, the senior batter was happy for skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and was confident that the side will perform well in the marquee tournament.

“When my name was not there (for Asian Games), I was a bit shocked. But, then, I was like they have a different thought process, you just have to accept it. Happy that Rutu (Gaikwad) will lead the side. All the young boys are there, I am sure they will do well,” Dhawan told PTI on Thursday.

I will be ready – Shikhar Dhawan on India comeback

Shikhar Dhawan has been India’s one of the most consistent performers in the 50-over ICC tournaments. The southpaw was part of India’s World Cup squads in 2015 and 2019. He also represented India in the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy. In all aforementioned tournaments, the star batter averaged over 50 with the bat.

However, Shikhar Dhawan is no longer in India’s scheme of things in ODI cricket and it looks unlikely that he will be picked for the World Cup at home. Still, Dhawan said that he will stay ready for any opportunity that comes for returning to the Indian setup.

“I will be ready, of course (for the comeback). That is why I keep myself fit (so whenever I get a chance I am ready). There is always a chance whether it is one percent or 20 percent.

“I still enjoy training and I still enjoy the game, these are the things in my control. Whatever decision is made, I respect that,” said the southpaw who remains a centrally-contracted cricketer and spends a lot of time at the National Cricket Academy.

Shikhar Dhawan further revealed that he hasn’t had any chats with the Indian selectors regarding his future and is focusing on IPL and other domestic tournaments.

“I have not spoken to any selector (about my future). I keep going to NCA. I enjoy my time there, the facilities are great. NCA has shaped my career and I am grateful for it.

“Also I have to prepare for the IPL. I will be playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali and, hopefully, the Vijay Hazare as well,” he said.
