Love chasing on any field and I feel I thrive when there is a big total - Shreyas Iyer
Opting to bowl first in the match, Punjab Kings bundled out Chennai Super Kings for 190 runs, which looked like a below-par total. Yuzvendra Chahal emerged as a top performer for PBKS as he bagged a stunning hat-trick in his 4-wicket over. Also, Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, Harpreet Brar, and Azmatullah Omarzai picked up wickets.
Chasing the target, Shreyas Iyer (72), Prabhsimran Singh (54), Priyansh Arya (23), and Shashank Singh (23) batted brilliantly, and PBKS finished off the match in 19.4 overs.
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer, who won the Player of the Match award, had a long chat with Harsha Bhogle after the match where he talked about several things.
While talking about his batting, Shreyas Iyer said that he loves chasing whenever there is a big score on the board as it brings the very best out of him. He said:
"Love chasing on any field and I feel I thrive when there is a big total on the board and you need to take the charge and build the momentum for the next batters. Try to play on my instincts and back myself."
Shreyas Iyer further revealed that he has been batting a lot in the nets against pacers with the new ball, and it has given him a lot of confidence. Iyer also said that he keeps his attitude very high whenever he is on the field. Shreyas Iyer elaborated:
"(on his away form) I don't want to curse it at the moment, I'm enjoying as much as possible, trying stay in the present and just reacting to the ball. Once I get to know if there is a big total, does not matter home or away, I keep the same approach, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
"I know if I stay out there, I can chase down any target. Lately I have been batting a lot in the nets and facing the quick bowlers with the new-ball, I know the ball will skid on and come at a great pace. It has given me immense confidence. .
"This is one part which I have really worked on. The attitude is something I keep high all the time whenever I enter the field. These four boxes I tick and you see the reflection on the field."
Prabh and Priyansh the starts they are giving, they have been fabulous - Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer further said that the humidity made things tough for them on the field. He stated:
"(on the humidity) More than the batting, the fielding was difficult as I was running from long-on to long-on. The over-rate also we had to maintain and I had to think in the nick of time. The humidity factor also, probably a lot more to any other field I have played on."
At last, Shreyas Iyer revealed the message from head coach Ricky Ponting during the run-chase, and he showered rich praise on the opening duo of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh for taking the team off to fabulous starts. He elaborated:
"We had a chat in between when Ricky came in and told we don't have to leave it till the last, we have to up the ante as they have a few amazing death bowlers in Pathirana, Khaleel and they have immense experience in their squad, the approach is to take on the bowlers and basically back ourselves.
"When I got in, I need to play a few balls and see how thew wicket is playing. I played 10 balls and decided it's time to take on the bowlers. Prabh and Priyansh the starts they are giving, they have been fabulous in their approach and it is not that they are slogging. They are playing amazing cricket and hopefully they continue with that same momentum. (on if he is looking at the points table or just letting it happen) Just letting it happen."
How did PBKS perform in the previous IPL match against CSK?
Punjab Kings delivered a good performance to defeat Chennai Super Kings by 18 runs in Match 22 of IPL 2025, held in Mullanpur on April 8.
Electing to bat first, PBKS were led by a stunning century from 24-year-old Priyansh Arya, who smashed 103 off just 42 balls. The explosive opener made the most of the reprieves he got and slammed a record-breaking ton despite wickets falling regularly at the other end.
His knock ensured PBKS crossed 150 by the 14th over and after his dismissal, Shashank Singh (52* off 36) and Marco Jansen (34* off 19) carried forward the momentum with a 65-run stand to propel Punjab Kings to a huge total of 219/6 in 20 overs.
With the ball, PBKS executed their plans well. Lockie Ferguson (2/40) bagged crucial wickets, removing both Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube, while Glenn Maxwell and Yash Thakur chipped in with a wicket each. Despite a late flourish from MS Dhoni and a solid 69 from Devon Conway, PBKS never let the pressure ease and restricted CSK to 201/5.
