Former Australia National Cricket Team head coach Darren Lehmann has opined that the team management will give the senior opening batsman David Warner “one more Test” before making any decision on his future in the longest format of the game.

Questions have been raised over Warner’s place in the team following his flop show in the Ashes 2023. The opening batsman has registered just one 50-plus score so far and has struggled against his nemesis Stuart Broad. In 6 innings, he has registered scores of 9, 36, 66, 25, 4 & 1.

Warner has expressed his desire to retire from Test cricket at his home ground early next year. However, with his back-to-back failures, many experts have opined that the decision on Warner’s future couldn’t be left in his hands.

Meanwhile, Darren Lehmann has backed Warner to take part in the fourth Ashes 2023 Test. He believes that Warner is one of the all-time greats and that Australia would back him instead of pressing the panic button after the defeat.

“I think they’ll stick with him. Old Trafford traditionally is a really good batting wicket. I think they’ll trust him for one more Test,” Lehmann told RSN on Monday, as quoted by news.com.au.

“He’s been a great of the game and obviously Stuart Broad has got his measure. My gut feel is they aren’t going to make a change now, they are not going to panic. They have done really well in the first two matches and Warner played well when there was a bit in it.

“I would give him one more, only knowing Old Trafford and what it’s like. It suits the way David plays. He’ll come out really aggressive in the next Test match, he’ll take the game on. All chips are in for Davey for this match, a bit like when he got the 200 against South Africa.”

Darren Lehmann further spoke about Australia’s team composition for the fourth Test. He opined that Australia will have to retain Mitchell Marsh in the playing XI alongside David Warner, which means Cameron Green has to wait to get back into the playing XI.

Lehmann added that there is only change he is expecting Australia to make in the pace department. The former coach believes that Josh Hazlewood will be back in the playing XI, replacing Scott Boland.

“I think they’ve still got to play Mitchell Marsh,” Lehmann told RSN.

“The noise is going to get loud over the next week if Cameron Green is fit. He was bowling yesterday so you’d think he’d be fine to go. It’s a tough time being a selector right now. Do you stick with David Warner? I would stick with him for one more and keep Marsh in, which probably means Cameron Green misses out, and that’s a tough call because he’s a superstar.”

“They may change, I don’t know, but they seem to be quite controlled in what they are doing. They are 2-1 up … I don’t think they’ll panic.

“I think they’ll make the one change for Scott Boland for Josh Hazlewood and then they’ll sum up what they do with Davey. If he doesn’t get any runs and they win, they may say ‘this is your swan song’. It will be interesting to see what happens.”

The fourth Test between Ben Stokes-led England and Pat Cummins-led Australia will be played from July 19 to 23. The match is set to be held at Old Trafford, Manchester.
