Australia legend Glenn McGrath has paid a glowing tribute to Stuart Broad as the latter brought down curtains on his illustrious career this week after the fifth and final Ashes Test at the Oval.

After the third day’s play of the fifth Test, the England great announced that he would retire following the game and bowed out of international cricket in a fairytale manner. He picked the last two Australian wickets to power England to a thrilling 49-run win and draw the series. Stuart Broad also finished the series as England’s highest wicket-taker.

He has retired from the game as one of the most decorated fast bowlers of all time. During his illustrious career, Stuart Broad picked up a record 153 Test wickets against Australia.

With tributes pouring in from all the corners for Stuart Broad, Glenn McGrath has also joined the bandwagon to congratulate the England great on a glorious career. In his column for the BBC, McGrath wrote that while Australia always cast Stuart Broad as a villain, there is no dearth of respect for him in the Australian cricket fraternity.

“England are not going to be the only ones who will miss the retiring Stuart Broad. Australia may have always cast him as the villain but that is only because we respect him. Taking the final two wickets of the fifth Ashes Test to draw an incredible series is a fitting end for a bowler I cannot speak highly enough about,” wrote McGrath.

“His phenomenal statistics – 604 wickets in 167 Tests – speak for themselves. They are a testament to his mental desire, skill and longevity. In terms of us fast bowlers there is only his team-mate James Anderson ahead of him and no-one else is going to get close,” he added.
