AUS vs ENG: Revealed! Why Joe Root Wore Black Armband In 5th Test

Joe Root wore a black armband on the final day of the 5th Test of Ashes 2023 in London. Many fans were confused to see Joe Root wearing the black armband as they did not know the reason. Now Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has revealed the reason for the same.

Ashes 2023 ended in a 2-2 draw after England won the final Test at The Kennington Oval by 49 runs. Chasing a gigantic 384 for victory in the final innings, Australia started well with an opening stand of 140 runs. However, Chris Woakes’ 4-wicket haul on the final day turned the game in England’s favor.

MCC Reveals Why Joe Root Wore Black Armband On Day 5 of 5th Test

In a Twitter post, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) revealed why Joe Root wore a black armband during day 5 of the 5th Test. Root wore the band to pay tribute to Richard Ibbotson, who died recently. Richard Ibbotson is a former chair of Root’s old cricket club Sheffield Collegiate CC. He also played for MCC.

“Joe Root wore a black armband yesterday in respect of Richard Ibbotson, who was Chair of Sheffield Collegiate CC and long time Playing Member of MCC. Our thoughts are with Richard’s friends and family”, MCC wrote on Twitter. Have a look at their post below.

Joe Root played a marvelous knock of 91 runs in the 2nd innings of the 5th Test. His wonderful knock helped England to post a mammoth 384-run target for Australia in the final innings. The right-handed batsman also arrived with a stupendous batting show in Ashes 2023.

Root slammed 412 runs in 9 innings in Ashes 2023, batting at an average of 51.50. He was the third-highest run-getter in the series. Root also slammed 1 century and 2 half-centuries in the series.

Meanwhile, Ashes 2023 series ended in a 2-2 draw. England won the final Test by 49 runs. Earlier, they lost won the 3rd Test by 3 wickets. Australia won the opening two games in the series. The 4th Test ended in a draw.
