England beat Australia by 8 runs in the first T20I of the three-match series in a thrilling match at the Optus Stadium, Perth on Sunday, October 09. Both teams scored more than 200 runs in a run-fest match.

The Australian wicket-keeper batsman, Matthew Wade narrowly escaped being given an obstructing the field out. This incident took place in the 17th over of Australia’s innings, with the Men in Yellow chasing 209 runs.

England fast bowler, Mark Wood bowled a short pitch delivery and the ball flew off Wade’s bat and flicked his helmet. Wood continued his follow-through and came running to catch the ball, but the bowler was pushed by the batsman and he could not take the catch. The ball could have hit the stumps too, but it didn’t.

We Are Here For Long Time In Australia So Would Be Risky One – Jos Buttler

The England players were not happy with the Australian wicket-keeper batsman’s act, but they decided not to appeal against it. When asked about the incident during the post-match presentation, Buttler said that he wasn’t sure what transpired between Wade and Wood, but he would make an appeal if it happened again in the T20 World Cup.

He stated that he could not appeal as they had just started their tour of Australia and it is still ongoing. An appeal led to a backlash from the local press and fans.

“I was looking at the ball the whole time, so I wasn’t sure what happened. They asked if I wanted to appeal, but I thought we are here for a long time in Australia so would be a risky one to go for so early in the trip,” Jos Buttler said after the match.

Buttler said “Maybe, yeah,” when asked about an appeal on the repeat of such an incident at the T20 World Cup.

After losing the toss, England scored a commanding total of 208-6. Despite David Warner’s brilliant 73 runs off 44 balls, the world champions managed to score 200 for the loss of 9 wickets. England skipper Jos Buttler hit 68 runs off 32 balls after returning from injury.
