Australian head coach Andrew McDonald suggested the possibility of Cameron Green returning to the Test side as a replacement for David Warner. Andrew McDonald said that the final decision will be made before the two-match Test series against the West Indies.

David Warner announced earlier this year that he would retire from Tests after the third match against Pakistan in Sydney. Potential replacements for the opening slot in the Australian squad include Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, Matt Renshaw, and Cameron Green.

Everyone Is Well Aware Of The Options – Andrew McDonald

Andrew McDonald emphasized that all options are under consideration for David Warner’s replacement, and no decision will be made until the deadline.

“All options will be considered. And I said we’re not going to make the decision until the deadline, which will be the West Indies game,” McDonald said.

“There’s a few options. Everyone is well aware of the options. I’m a person that once you know when you’re going to make the decision, you make it at that point in time. Until then the discussions will be open. We’ll put a deadline on that. That’ll be the West Indies selection meeting,” he added.

The Australian team secured two consecutive victories against Pakistan in the first two games of the ongoing series. The hosts are expected to remain unchanged for the third match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), where Warner is scheduled to retire from Tests.

David Warner Is Not A Selector – Andrew McDonald

The selection dilemma centers on choosing between a specialist opener like Harris, Bancroft, or Renshaw and selecting the best six batters in the lineup. The selectors are actively discussing the prospect of having two all-rounders in Mitchell Marsh and Green.

Andrew McDonald confirmed that Cameron Green is actively being considered in the ongoing discussions about selecting the best six batters. While David Warner named Marcus Harris as his possible successor, McDonald clarified that Warner is not a selector.

“Cameron Green, as a discussion around who are the best six batters, has definitely been in the conversation,” McDonald confirmed.

“Davey’s not a selector. And I remember back to when I think Davey endorsed Matt Renshaw so I think the next one will probably be Cam Bancroft and then Cameron Green and he’ll have all bases covered, but…it’s great when a fellow player endorses someone else internally. It means that they’ve probably excluded other players as well, but he was asked his opinion and we’re happy with him to express that.”

On Tuesday, David Warner emphasized Marcus Harris’s hard work and consistent performance. Warner suggested that if the selectors place their trust in him, Harris is likely to perform well, drawing a parallel between their playing styles.
