Former Australian batter and 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup winning captain Micheal Clarke in a recent interview claimed that David Warner was lucky to get away with some of his wrongdoings and controversies off the field as it could have easily led Cricket Australia to snatch a central contract, early on in Warner’s cricketing career.
Clarke was the captain of Australia when David Warner made his test debut back in December 2011 against New Zealand at Brisbane. It was a dawn in the career of the Pocket Size dynamite who went on to become one of the most prolific and aggressive openers in World Cricket, arguably one of the greatest in Australian cricket since Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist.
Warner’s aggressive nature was not limited during matches on the field. He was surrounded with controversies due to his behaviour off the field and it was something that could have ended his career as well if it wasn’t for certain senior players supporting him in his early days.
“David Warner Had The Help Of His Seniors..”- Micheal Clarke Opens Up On How The “Little Bull” Retained His Spot
Micheal Clarke in a recent interview with ESPN, claimed that he even had a little bit of fight to keep David Warner in the team, given his ability and contribution to the team. The former captain would even call the left-hander, a little bull for his aggression but in the end was happy to see the New South Wales learning his lessons as he kept ageing.
“David Warner Should Have Retired From All Formats..”- Micheal Clarke Ahead Of His Farewell Test At SCG
As we all know, David Warner will be wearing the whites for Australia for the last time in his farewell test match against Pakistan at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground, starting tomorrow. He also announced his retirement from the ODI format but has kept a door open for a possible return in case Australia needs him for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Warner will only play T20 cricket moving forward and it will be fair to say that his main target will be to do well in the 2-team ICC t20 World Cup later this June in the USA and West Indies. While many have praised David Warner for his longevity, Micheal Clarke believes that he should have retired from all formats as it was a perfect stage for him to do so.
“Guess I thought it would have been the ideal time to walk away from international cricket in general but [he] wants to keep playing T20 cricket. Now the balance is going to be form playing domestic T20s verses stepping up and playing international. He’ll still have to earn his selection. Think his form in domestic T20 is something the selectors will be looking at. We have a lot of young players coming through in that T20 format that they might pick for the World Cup. Again, the way Davey’s played in all three formats is credit to him.” – Clarke concluded.
