Pakistan allrounder Mohammad Nawaz has admitted that his team’s failure to pick up wickets in the middle overs is a big concern. Pakistan have been struggling with the issue for quite some time now.

The onus of securing wickets during the middle overs falls upon the spinners. However, Pakistan’s spinners have failed to do so in recent times. The problem was one of the main reasons behind their failure to qualify for the final in the Asia Cup last month. And Pakistan have failed to sort things out in the ongoing World Cup too.

Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz are the designated spinners of the team but have failed to lead the spin department well so far. Both of them have picked up only 2 wickets each in three games so far. In Indian conditions, the spinners play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the game and Pakistan will be hoping that their spinners start performing soon as the World Cup gears up to enter its business phase.

Mohammad Nawaz admits the problem:

As Pakistan look to bounce back in their next World Cup game after the loss to India, Mohammad Nawaz has admitted that his team is not performing well with the ball in the middle overs. Admitting that the problem has been there for the last 6-7 games, the left-arm spinner insisted that Pakistan are working hard to solve the problem.

“I admit that the team is not performing in the middle overs. This has been going on for the last six to seven games. We are doing our best to remove this weakness,” he said.

“Yes, on flat wickets, we will be able to score runs but we have to take wickets in the middle overs. We are able to bat in the middle overs, but are failing to take wickets,” he added.

Speaking further, the spin-bowling allrounder said that he and his teammates have moved on from the defeat to India and are focused on the upcoming game against Australia. He highlighted the importance of the game against the five-time world champions, saying that a win would make things easier for them in their pursuit of the semifinal spot.

“The loss against India is in the past, we are focused on our next game against Australia,” Mohammad Nawaz said.

“Australia made a great comeback and we are aware of that. We will do our best to win the game and get our confidence back. A win against Australia is important as we can ease our way to the semi-final,” he added.

The match between Pakistan and Australia is scheduled to take place on Friday (October 20) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
