AUS vs PAK: "Who Cares About David Warner?" Ian Chappell

As David Warner gears up for his farewell Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Former Aussie Captain Ian Chappell has made a bold claim about nobody caring about what Warner has done in his illustrious career which began more than a decade ago Chappell also praised the Left-hander’s skills and flamboyancy and claimed that he is one of the most prolific openers to ever grace the game.

The 37-year-old often called as the “Pocket size Dynamite” for his explosiveness will be putting on the Whites for Australia one last time against Pakistan for the final Test of a 3-match Test series which began last year in December. The hosts have already claimed a series win after beating the visitors by 79 runs in the 2nd Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

In the 1st Test, it was David Warner who laid the foundation for an emphatic one-sided victory for Australia by a margin of 360 runs. He played out a memorable knock of 164 off 211 balls which eventually helped his team post a 1st inning total of 487.

While trying to shorten the trail, Pakistan were bundled out for 271 before Australia posted a target of 450 runs. As the visitors tried to put on a show, the Aussie bowling line-up led by Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, bamboozled Pakistan’s top and middle order to start the Benaud-Qadir Trophy series in style.

Although David Warner wasn’t able to perform the way he did in the 1st Test, the Baggy Greens registered another comfortable victory which left Pakistan stranded and forced them to play for their pride in the 3rd Test. But given the fact that it will be Warner’s farewell Red-ball match, it will not be shocking to see Australia going hard for a whitewash.

Moreover, the Asian giants under the captaincy of Shan Masood will be determined to win their first Test match in Australia since December 1995 when a Wasim Akram-led Pakistan defeated the mighty Australians by 74 runs which also came at the SCG, which is also the venue for the 3rd Test starting from tomorrow (January 3).

“Like Everyone, David Warner Too Has Made Mistakes”, Says Ian Chappell

Ahead of the final test match of David Warner, former Captain Ian Chappell claimed that Warner’s skills and aggressive batting style were something very rare to see especially against the new ball. But in terms of where he ranks among Australia’s greatest batters, Chappell simply said that no one cares about it.

“If you’re an opener, as soon as you fail once or twice, it’s always ‘mate, perhaps you should steady down a bit. Rankings are a load of bulls, in my opinion. Could the bloke play? Bloody oath he could play. Was he one of the better players? Sure. Where did he rank? Who knows and who cares.” – Chappell said.

“Very few players – and when I say very few, in my memory in the Australian Test side – have had the skill and the guts to play aggressively against the new ball and succeed. I don’t think many people understand how courageous it is, because you will always get someone telling you how to play when you fail – it doesn’t matter where you bat.” Chappell added.

Ian Chappell also hailed David Warner’s strong character of always wanting to fight for his place and said that the Sandpaper incident in South Africa was not entirely his fault.

“The sandpaper incident in South Africa has colored a lot of opinions and put a lot of people against David, but if anybody thinks that there were only three people involved in that sandpaper rubbish, then they believe in the Easter Bunny and Father Christmas.”

“David, like all of us, has made mistakes, but he owns up to them. He’s continued to confound people when people say he could be finished, he comes out and makes runs.” – Chappell concluded.

Meanwhile, David Warner has scored 8695 runs in 111 Tests at an average of almost 45 which also includes 26 Hundreds and 36 Fifties.
