Following a clean sweep against the West Indies, Australia will host a three-match Test series against South Africa, with the first to be played at the Gabba on Saturday, December 17. Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has urged South Africa to tease David Warner during the upcoming Test series. The 41-year-old believes it will be fair game as long as they don’t cross the line.

Steve Smith and David Warner will play a Test match against South Africa for the first time since the ‘Sandpapergate’ scandal in March 2018. The duo served a one-year ban; Smith was banned from leadership for two years, while Warner was banned for life. The southpaw recently requested that Cricket Australia lift his leadership ban, but he later withdrew his appeal to overturn the lifetime ban.

Speaking on Sky Sports Radio’s The Big Sports Breakfast, Clarke expected that the Proteas would have a crack at the dynamic opener. However, he warned that the opener might also give it back to them.

“Their approach to any player that was involved in that ‘Sandpapergate,’ they’ve got it mate. It doesn’t need to cross the line, but you can make it very clear to someone like David Warner that the Australian fans are off him,” Michael Clarke said.

“I want to see Davey Warner, if they have a crack at him on the field while he’s batting, go back to being that bulldog and give it back to them, Davey.”

The 36-year-old has had a tough week, both on and off the field. Given his recent struggles in red-ball cricket, this series will be crucial for him.
