In his notorious on-field collision with bowler Kagiso Rabada during the 2018 Test series, Australian star batter Steve Smith is accused by former South African captain Faf du Plessis of “milking” the situation. In his memoirs, the 38-year-old made reference to the incident and compared Smith to a football player.

The South African speedster allegedly roared in the captain’s direction during the second Test of the series at St. George’s Park in Port Elizabeth after lbw-ing Smith for 25 before they even came into contact.

Steve Smith turned around right away, accusing Shaun Marsh of making contact before conducting an unsuccessful review. Rabada was given a two-match penalty by the ICC, but it was overturned after a six-hour appeal.

Du Plessis noted the following in his memoirs “Faf: Through Fire”:

“This episode has almost been forgotten against the backdrop of what the series still had up its sleeve, or more accurately, down its trousers. They brushed shoulders during one of KG’s overs but Smith milked it like a football player. We knew that KG was one demerit point away from a suspension.”

Steve Smith expressed his displeasure after the ICC reversed his punishment, saying that he would never urge his bowlers to get in their area after getting a wicket and that the ICC had established a precedent.

Prior to the next series, the right-handed hitter refuted any hostility between the two nations. Early in 2020, the same violation against Joe Root resulted in another ban for the 27-year-old Proteas bowler.

What’s Happened Has Happened: Kagiso Rabada

Before the first Test in Brisbane, Rabada gave a hint to News Corp that he might not speak about the event before his retirement. He clarified:

“What’s happened has happened. I am not going to say anything now. After my career I might talk a bit more about it and look back at what happened. But at the moment we will move on. It was definitely a Test series I will never forget and things did not end too well off the field.”

The next series will be Australia and South Africa’s first Test match since the ball-tampering incident in Newlands in 2018.
