Australia batsman Travis Head could play the second AUS vs WI Test against West Indies under team isolation protocols after testing positive for Covid-19. The left-handed batsman felt unwell towards the end of the first Test in Adelaide last week before he tested positive for Covid.

He has also not traveled to Brisbane, the venue for the second Test, and has been given more time to recover. According to Australian news outlet The Age, the middle-order batsman’s arrival in Brisbane will be held back until Tuesday (January 23) morning. Pat Cummins and his teammates’ main training session at the Gabba is scheduled for 5 pm on Tuesday.

Travis Head scored a brilliant century in the first Test and was adjudged the Man of the Match for his performance. Replying to West Indies’ first innings total of 188, Australia were reeling at 129 for 5 before Travis Head’s century helped them post 283. Soon after the game, he tested positive for Covid-19 and has been in isolation since then.

Travis Head is still in contention to play:

While Travis Head will be hoping that he tests negative by the time he joins the team, he could play the game even if he tests positive again. Last year, Australia batsman Matt Renshaw was allowed to play the Sydney Test against South Africa even after he tested positive for Covid-19 just before the start of the Test.

At that time, Renshaw had to spend the game watching on television in a separate room from the rest of the team when he wasn’t on the field. While fielding, Renshaw was socially distanced from the team. Meanwhile, opener Usman Khawaja has been cleared to play the second Test.

The opener’s participation in the game was in doubt after he suffered a painful blow to his jaw from a short delivery. He was spitting blood after the blow and had to retire hurt for 9 in the second innings, However, he has been cleared of any delayed concussion and is set to open the innings in Brisban.

“Usman Khawaja has been cleared to play the second Test match against the West Indies in Brisbane,” a team spokesperson said. “Khawaja was assessed again today and has no symptoms of delayed concussion. He will train at the Gabba tomorrow.”

Australia have already taken an unassailable lead in the two-match Test series by winning the first Test by 10 wickets. They have won all four Tests at home so far in the ongoing season and would be looking to extend their winning run.
