A bizarre incident took place during the second T20I between Australia and West Indies at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday (February 12). The hosts were denied a run-out for not appealing during the closing stages of the game.
The incident took place in the 19th over of West Indies’ innings when the match was very much in Australia’s favor. The tourists needed an improbable 53 runs in the last two overs with just 1 wicket in hand. On the third ball of the over bowled by left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson, Alzarri Joseph hit the ball towards the cover region and ran for a single.
Mitchell Marsh quickly collected the ball and threw it at the non-striker’s end where Johnson took the bails off. The Australian fielders, however, seemingly assumed that Joseph was already inside the crease when Johnson broke the stump and decided against appealing for a run-out. The replay was then shown on the big screen and the Australian players started celebrating but their joy was cut short by umpire Gerard Abood.

The on-field umpire was heard telling the TV umpire ‘No appeal’ and stood by his decision. Marsh and his teammates were seen gathering around the umpire who was heard telling them: “Stop, stop, stop…there was no appeal.”
The players were heard expressing their frustration but it did not make much of a difference as Abood made it clear that Joseph would not be adjudged out since there was no appeal for a runout.
“Can we get on with the game, guys…guys we are getting into real poor territory,” the umpire told the players.
Talking about the rules, law 31.3, the timing of appeals, states: “For an appeal to be valid, it must be made before the bowler begins his/her run-up or, if there is no run-up, his/her bowling action to deliver the next ball, and before Time has been called.”
