Australia coach Andrew McDonald has backed Mitchell Marsh as Australia skipper for the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. After the ouster of Aaron Finch, Mitchell Marsh has led Australia in the shortest format.

Matthew Wade is another player who has led Australia in T20Is. However, he is unlikely to lead the side in a crucial tournament like World Cup. Pat Cummins and Steve Smith are other powerful contenders to lead the Australian team in T20 World Cup 2024.

I think all roads will lead to Mitchell Marsh: Australia coach

Australia Coach Andrew McDonald feels that Mitchell Marsh will be the best choice to lead the team in the T20 World Cup. He also added management is satisfied with the way he has led the team in the past.

“I think all roads will lead to Mitch [Mitchell Marsh], so just got to get that ticked off in certain areas. We are happy and comfortable with the way he’s been able to operate with that T20 team. We think he’s the leader for the World Cup, and I think that will just be a matter of due course”, McDonald told cricket.com.au.

Earlier, Mitchell Marsh led Australia to victories in the T20I series against South Africa and West Indies. Recently, Mitchell Marsh led Australia to a clean sweep against New Zealand in a T20I series. Australia won the 1st T20I by 6 wickets, the 2nd T20I by 72 runs, and the 3rd T20I by 327 runs to grab an impeccable series win.

Steve Smith won’t be in the starting XI: Ricky Ponting

Steve Smith is another option to lead the side, he is not as influential in the shortest format like ODIs and Tests. Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting feels that Smith can be part of the squad but would not be fit for the playing XI.

“You love having guys like him around because of the experience and the calming influence that you can have around a tam during a World Cup. But the other thing you always have to be mindful of is what role can he play? So I would think if Steve Smith does find his way into the squad, I don’t think he will be in the starting XI”, Ponting told ICC Review.
