Australia Likely To Name New ODI Captain Only After T20 World Cup- Reports

Aaron Finch’s sudden retirement from the ODI Setup means that Cricket Australia has to find a new skipper. There are a lot of candidates who are eager to lead the nation like Steven Smith & Pat Cummins. It would be interesting to see who would be in charge of the National Cricket Team.

We all have seen how dominant the Aussies were against New Zealand in the recently concluded ODI Series as the hosts won the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy by 3-0.

World Cricket has seen that Aussies don’t make a mess of ODI Cricket by any means. 5 Time ODI World Cup Champions would be aware of the 2019 Cricket World Cup where they came so close but failed in a crucial junction. Chief Selector George Bailey has a tough task on his hands as there is only 1 year left for ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and finding a leader in a short period won’t be easy at all.

Andrew McDonald on ODI Captaincy

Head Coach Andrew McDonald was asked by the reporters who would be the successor to Aaron Finch. “It’s probably the end of the (T20) World Cup really isn’t it?” McDonald said.

“We have got a little bit of time to consider what those options look like. We’ve got the (T20) World Cup in front of us so that’s more pressing at this stage than filling the captaincy void.” Andrew McDonald concluded.

Steven Smith the Front-runner to ODI Captaincy

Steven Smith has the experience of captaining the national side and he knows how to tackle challenges. Cricket Australia at the same time, would be aware of his infamous ball-tampering scandal. The entire World Cricket has seen how much he & David Warner suffered after that scandal.

Marnus Labuschagne can be the unexpected skipper as the batter will bat more responsibly. We have seen how Smith’s batting gets affected by the burden of captaincy in the past. Head Coach Andrew McDonald & George Bailey will have to think about the future also.
