Australian cricket team has created a record with their thumping win over England in the second ODI at Headingley. With this win, Australia have now surpassed Sri Lanka in the list for most consecutive wins in ODIs.

The recent win over England is Australia's 14th ODI win in a row which started way back in the ODI World Cup 2023. Pat Cummins and his men clinched the title back then by defeating hosts India in the final.

The winning streak dates back to the ODI World Cup held last year after Australia lost the first two matches in the tournament to India and South Africa. However, they haven't looked back since and have gone on to achieve this remarkable feat.

Australia surpass Sri Lanka to achieve this record

Australia have now gone past Sri Lanka, who held a winning streak of 13 wins in a row in 2023. South Africa is next on the list with 12 victories in a row during 2005. Pakistan and South Africa are the next two best teams with 12 wins each in a row which they made in 2007-08 and 2016-17 respectively.

The first match of Australia's current winning streak was against Sri Lanka, whom they thumped by 5 wickets in their third match of the ODI World Cup. After the defeats in the first two games, they won 9 matches in a row to lift a record sixth ODI World Cup title.

In the final, they were up against a strong Indian side who had comprehensively beaten almost every team in the tournament by then and were undefeated till that point. However, Pat Cummins and his team showed why they are so good in knockout matches and stunned India in front of their home crowd.

After winning 9 matches in the World Cup, they whitewashed West Indies at home 3-0 making it 12 wins in a row. They have now won the opening two matches of the ongoing ODI series against England which makes it 14 wins in a row.

The second-longest winning streak in men's ODIs

This is currently the second-longest winning streak in men's ODI cricket history and third-longest overall. Australia's men's team also holds the record for the longest winning streak of 21 matches in a row, which they made in 2003.

The Australian team of that time was considered an invincible one that won almost everything that came their way. Overall, the Australian women's team holds the record for 26 wins in a row in ODI cricket which they made between 2018 and 2021.

Australia outclass England; takes a 2-0 lead

Coming to the match, Australia registered a dominating 68-run win over hosts England to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series. Batting first on a slow surface, Australia scored 270 on the back of half-centuries from skipper Mitchell Marsh and wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

At the innings break, it seemed like England would chase down the target comfortably but Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood had other ideas. Both struck with the new ball and put England on the backfoot straight away. Several batters got starts but England needed a big knock from one of them.

Jamie Smith top-scored for England with 49 while Ben Duckett scored a quickfire 32 off 25 balls at the top. Brydon Carse and Adil Rashid played good hands in the lower order but England fell well short in the end.
