Axar Patel delivered a crucial breakthrough for India in the fourth T20I against Australia, dismissing Josh Inglis with a smart piece of bowling at the Carrara Oval in Queensland.

Inglis, who was looking dangerous after hitting a couple of boundaries off Jasprit Bumrah, was cleaned up for 12 runs off 11 balls by the Indian all-rounder.

The left-arm spinner kept things tight and finally broke through when Inglis tried to step out and go big. Axar Patel bowled it flatter and quicker, targeting the stumps, and Inglis completely missed his shot as the ball sneaked through the gap to crash into the middle stump.

Axar Patel stars with bat and ball

Axar Patel was impressive with the ball in the fourth T20I, finishing with the figures of 2/40 in his four overs. The Indian all-rounder also contributed with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 21 runs off 11 balls to play a key role in the touring side’s 48-run victory over Australia to take a 2-1 lead in the T20I series.

He was named Player of the Match for his all-round efforts in the fourth T20I against Australia. After the match, Axar Patel said at the post-match presentation, “I got a chance because I went into bat at number 7, so I think I had a chance to get to know the wicket. After I spoke with the batters, they were saying that the wicket is not coming on... There was an unexpected bounce, and the wicket was a little bit slower, so I just held my position and hit.”

He further added, “I think whenever the team needs me, that's my preferred (batting) position. If I have an impact for my team, I think that's the best game for me. I don't think that number 6 or 7 is my preferred position. I just go there and think about what my team needs now, and I'll do that. I was thinking that was the batters' strength, so I was bowling according to my plan. If the batters are going to hit me down the line, then I can bowl in the middle stump. Good length, 5-6 m length, and then if things are slipping from me, then I'll just bowl an odd full one. So that's my plan in these conditions; I think wicket to wicket is the most important thing.”
