Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has praised Ayush Mhatre for his impressive skills and composure in IPL 2025. Fleming stated that the young cricketer has all the qualities to become a modern-day T20 cricketer after the match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Chennai suffered a two-run loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, May 3. Ayush Mhatre stole the spotlight with his batting. The CSK batter scored 94 runs off just 48 balls, including nine fours and five sixes, but they failed to chase down the 214-run target.
Ayush Mhatre Has Got Hand-Eye Coordination - Stephen Fleming
Stephen Fleming said that Ayush Mhatre can perform under pressure and execute his game plan in crucial situations. Fleming added that having a variety of shots is important, but showcasing them on a big stage, especially against top players, is what makes Mhatre special.
"He's got talent. He's got hand-eye coordination. He's got a beautiful, silky swing. He's aggressive. Everything that we like about a modern-day T20 player. But, to me, it's the temperament and being able to execute in a trial and then on the big stage. That's what I'm most impressed with,” Fleming said in the post-match press conference.
"It's one thing to have a lot of shots, but to be able to execute that game plan on a big stage in front of some of the biggest players in the world is what I admire,” he added.
Ayush Mhatre Fitted in Seamlessly - Stephen Fleming
Ayush Mhatre was brought into the CSK squad after captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined due to injury. Stephen Fleming said Mhatre quickly adapted to the team, adding that he “fitted in seamlessly.”
"We have a pretty relaxed camp, which has always been our style. He has some teammates [from Mumbai] on the side. Shivam Dube is one that has seen a fair bit of him. Again, it comes back to his maturity. He fitted in seamlessly. It's often not what the team around him does, but it's just the way that he behaves,” Fleming added.
Chennai Super Kings Set to Face Rajasthan Royals on May 12
Ayush Mhatre added a vital 114-run stand for the third wicket with Ravindra Jadeja in just 64 balls. Mhatre became the third-youngest player to register a fifty in IPL history, reaching the milestone in 25 deliveries.
CSK needed only 43 runs from the last four overs. However, they failed to cross the finish line. They recorded their fourth consecutive defeat and remain at the bottom of the table with just two wins from 11 games.
Mhatre has scored 163 runs in four games at an average of 40.75 and an impressive strike rate of 185.22. He is set to be in action next during the match between CSK and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday, May 12.
