Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha has had his say on Angelo Mathews’ controversial timed-out dismissal in the game against Sri Lanka. As it turned out Bangladesh won the game in the end and notched up their second win of this campaign.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan said that he did it since it was within the laws saying that he took the game as being in a war situation and doing what was best for the team’s cause.

Mathews was ruled timed-out after he exceeded the two minutes allowed for an incoming batsman to take strike since he had to fix the broken strap of his helmet. This happened after Shakib appealed against him. He was thus dismissed without even facing a ball.

Leave The Decision To The Umpires: Chandika Hathurusingha

Now the Bangladesh coach, who is a Sri Lanka by birth and a former Sri Lankan cricketer, said that he will leave it up to the umpires to decide whether the mode of dismissal should be kept on or not.

“I don’t think it (the row) is going to stop here, whatever I say. The only thing I can say is that it’s one of the modes of dismissal. My suggestion is to leave it to the umpires to decide, I don’t think you should leave it to the players to appeal and all that” said Haturusingha.

The Bangladesh coach also kept a word on Shakib’s future. He played his fifth World Cup but failed to make an impact like he did in the last World Cup. His fellow teammates Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah also might have played their last World Cups.

“We have had him for a long time, when you have someone of Shakib’s caliber as your number one all-rounder, it’s two players in one…It’s hard (to replace him in the side). They have been the best of Bangladesh cricket in the short journey of Bangladesh cricket. If they decided to quit, it’s a change (passing) of the baton kind of thing,” the Bangladesh coach said.

The Tigers play their last game against Australia on November 11, Saturday with their Champions Trophy 2025 qualification on the line.
