Faruque Ahmed has been officially removed from his position as the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) just nine months and eight days after taking charge.
The controversial decision came after the National Sports Council (NSC) sacked Faruque Ahmed as their representative on the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s board of directors, which automatically ended his tenure as BCB president.
Faruque Ahmed sacked as BCB President by National Sports Council
Faruque took over as the BCB president after Nazmul Hasan was removed from his position following last year’s explosive student protests. He was selected as their councilor by the National Sports Council (NSC), but now they have sacked him, citing legal grounds.
In an official letter dated May 29, the NSC informed the BCB’s chief executive officer that Faruque Ahmed’s role on the board was being cancelled under Section 13.2(b)(4) of their rules. Earlier, Faruque had clearly said he wouldn’t quit despite mounting pressure from the government.
The statement by the National Sports Council (NSC) reads, as quoted by Cricbuzz, “In light of the no-confidence letter sent by eight BCB directors against Faruque Ahmed and the report presented by the fact-finding committee about the BPL, his nomination as the representative of the National Sports Council (sports ministry) has been cancelled.”
Aminul Islam set to replace Faruque Ahmed as BCB President
And if that wasn’t enough drama, just hours before the NSC letter went viral, eight BCB directors voted in favor of Faruque’s removal from the presidency. They accused Ahmed of autocratic leadership, violating the BCB constitution, financial mismanagement, and maintaining ties with controversial figures.
Notably, Faruque Ahmed had become BCB president after nine directors voted for him. He was one of two directors nominated by the sports ministry and joined the BCB board on August 21 last year. Now, former Bangladesh captain Aminul Islam is likely to take over as the new BCB president.
Aminul Islam has confirmed that the Sports Ministry contacted him, and he has agreed to take charge as BCB president for now, until the board holds its elections for the top position.
Faruque Ahmed escalates BCB row to ICC, Bangladesh Cricket faces possible ban
Meanwhile, Faruque Ahmed has knocked on the International Cricket Council’s door just hours after being removed from his position at the Bangladesh Cricket Board. He has formally reached out to the ICC chairman, Jay Shah, and other directors, escalating the controversy to the global level.
With a complaint now sitting on the ICC's desk, the Bangladesh Cricket Board could find itself in hot water, as this power struggle might lead to serious consequences, including the risk of an ICC ban. Now, it will be interesting to see how the ICC responds to the matter.

Faruque Ahmed said in a statement, “I have informed ICC Chairman Jay Shah about the entire matter. In addition, I have contacted at least 5 to 7 ICC directors to make them aware of the issue. I believe — and I am confident — that the ICC will promptly begin taking action. You will see, within the next couple of days, a letter from the ICC will arrive at the BCB.”
