Bangladesh To Take A Call On Tamim Iqbal's Captaincy Soon

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will be having a discussion on the ODI captaincy with veteran batsman Tamim Iqbal once he makes himself available. The BCB confirmed the development on Tuesday (July 11).

The development comes just a few days after Tamim Iqbal’s retirement episode in which he decided to take a U-turn after sensationally announcing his retirement from international cricket. The Bangladesh great hung up his boots during a tearful press conference last week, a day after the shocking loss to Afghanistan in the first ODI.

But hours later, he decided to reverse his decision after intervention from Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Tamim Iqbal is yet to play for Bangladesh since then. He was not a part of the Bangladesh team for the last two games of the ODI series against Afghanistan. In his absence, Litton Das led the team.

BCB to discuss captaincy with Tamim Iqbal:

With Tamim Iqbal deciding to change his retirement decision, a final decision on his ODI captaincy can be expected too. The BCB is all set to discuss the same with the senior batsman once he returns home after traveling to Dubai and the United Kingdom for medical reasons. The opening batsman will take the tour to get his back checked.

“Tamim is going to Dubai. He will go to the UK on July 25 or 26. He has taken two appointments in two medical centers in London,” BCB’s Cricket Operation Chairman Jalal Yunus told reporters in Chattogram on Tuesday.

“First let him come. We are discussing it (captaincy) with him. There is an issue with his fitness. He (Tamim) said – let me come and then will discuss it,” he added.

Speaking further, Jalal said that Bangladesh will form a preliminary squad for the Asia Cup. As far as Tamim’s presence is concerned, it will depend on his fitness. Asia Cup 2023 is scheduled to be played from August 31st to September 17th. With the World Cup to be played in October, Bangladesh are unlikely to take any risk with the fitness of their star batsman.

“We will give out a 25-26-member preliminary squad (for Asia Cup) and we will know when he can join the camp. We will be watching his fitness to decide on that. Everyone would get a rest till the 30th (July). Some would go to play outside. Then we would begin our preparations (for Asia Cup) with a conditioning camp,” he said.
