Bangladesh have violated the ICC Code of Conduct during the first day's play of the opening Test against India in Chennai. The team can now face a serious penalty by the International Cricket Council (ICC) which can put their World Test Championship (WTC) final hopes in danger.

After the end of Day 1, Bangladesh were found 10 overs short of the mandatory 90-over target in a day in red-ball cricket. Unfortunately, the visitors could bowl just 80 overs despite using the extra half an hour. As a result, they are in danger of losing crucial WTC points which can be extremely important later.

This is not the first time the Bangla Tigers have been found short of their daily target. During the Test series against Pakistan, they were found three overs short of their target and were docked three points in this WTC cycle.

What are the ICC WTC playing conditions on slow over rate?

As per article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions- "A team will have one (1) World Test Championship competition point deducted from its points total for each Penalty Over it incurs during the Round Stage."

The violation could prove to be decisive for Bangladesh, who are currently in fourth position in the WTC points table. They were sixth before the series against Pakistan but a historic 2-0 win over the home team helped them move up two spots to fourth.

The excessive heat and humidity in Chennai could also be the main reason behind the slow over rate. The conditions in Chennai are not easy at times and the teams have found it tough to perform consistently in such conditions.

Harsha Bhogle slams Bangladesh's slow overrate

Meanwhile, cricket experts were also unhappy with Bangladesh's over rate on Day 1. Commentator Harsha Bhogle called it "unacceptable" and even called for the umpires to take a role to improve such things in the future.

"Bangladesh's overrate has been unacceptable. We're 45 minutes into Tea and we're not even through to 60 overs here. The best that Bangladesh can achieve at this rate is about 70-72 overs (at the end of the day) and that has to be unacceptable. Wonder when the umpires start playing a more active role here to get things moving," Bhogle said during his commentary stint.

The Bangla Tigers bowled just 23 overs in the first session and 25 overs in the second session of Day 1. They tried to cover up the over rate in the final session through the more use of spinners but could bowl just 32 overs.

Thus, they bowled just 80 overs throughout the day. Despite the spinners bowling 30 overs in the day, they were unable to even reach closer to the regular 90-over mark.

Meanwhile, the Bangla Tigers started well after Najmul Hossain Shanto elected to field first after winning the toss. They had India on the ropes at 144-6.

But Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja stitched together a marathon partnership to take the game away from the visitors and finish the day on a high. Ashwin slammed his sixth Test hundred.
