Moises Henriques vehemently asserted that his grab to dismiss Tom Rogers in the Big Bash League was executed cleanly, sparking renewed debates about ambiguous aspects of cricket regulations. In Tuesday night’s encounter, the Melbourne Stars secured their inaugural victory of the season with an eight-wicket triumph over the Sydney Sixers, injecting newfound vigor into their campaign.

However, the focal point of discussion from the match revolved around Moises Henriques’ remarkable catch to eliminate Rogers early in the Stars’ pursuit of victory. Soaring skyward at mid-off, Henriques secured the ball cleanly before descending to the ground, with the ball seemingly making contact with the turf while firmly gripped in his right hand.

Cricket regulations stipulate that a catch is not considered complete until the fielder maintains full control over their body, prohibiting the ball from touching the ground throughout this period.

The catch underwent scrutiny through the referral system with a tentative initial decision of “out.” Third umpire Claire Polosak, faced with insufficient evidence, refrained from overturning the decision, expressing uncertainty regarding whether Henriques had his fingers beneath the ball.

This dismissal invoked memories of Mitchell Starc‘s contentious catch of Ben Duckett in the Ashes, where he grasped the ball at Lord’s but inadvertently rubbed it against the ground as he slid across the turf.

Moises Henriques acknowledged the resemblance to his catch, highlighting a gray area in the game where fielders may believe they have the ball under control, even if regulations suggest otherwise. Despite injuring his left shoulder during the catch, Henriques persevered on the field. Still, the Sixers will monitor his recovery before their upcoming clash with the Sydney Thunder on Saturday.

“I Was Shocked When I Heard They Are Checking”, Says Moises Henriques After Taking Tom Rogers’ Catch

Moises Henriques had to rush with the Physio right after taking the catch of Tom Rogers as he blew his landing shoulder into the ground. But when he came to know that the Umpires were checking if the catch he completed was legal or not, Henriques was shocked because he thought the catch was completed.

“I obviously felt it was out. I felt I had complete control over the ball. I felt like the ball was never going to come out once I had landed. I didn’t really get a good look at the replay to be honest because I was off with the physio at the time. I was surprised when they told me they were checking. I just thought it was out. There was never a bobble in the hand or anything. So it felt pretty clean to me.” – Henriques said.
He further added that he never felt like he lost control of the ball and also brought forward several possibilities that came into the fray while taking a catch.
“I’m not sure that if there’s a little bit of a finger under the ball, if that’s out. Or if you’re still holding the ball completely, or if you’re using the ground to control the ball, then maybe that shouldn’t be out. But I felt like I never lost control of the ball.” – Moises Henriques concluded.
