BBL Points Table 2023-24: Updated Standings, Most Runs, Most Wickets After Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Renegades, Match 2: The second match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 was played between the Moises Henriques-led Sydney Sixers and Nic Maddinson-led Melbourne Renegades at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday, December 8.
Melbourne Renegades won the toss and elected to field first in the match. Bowling first, they were off to a poor start as the Sixers’ opening duo of Steven Smith and Josh Philippe batted quite well and put together an amazing partnership of 58 runs.
Renegades managed to dismiss James Vince (1) for a low score, but Moises Henriques (40), Jordan Silk (26), and Jack Edwards (14) performed well with the bat and made sure that their side posted a good score on the board.
Steve Smith top-scored for Sydney Sixers with 61 runs off 42 balls, including 7 fours and 1 six, as the team posted a huge score of 175/6 on the board. For the Renegades, Will Sutherland and Adam Zampa picked up two wickets each while Kane Richardson bagged one wicket.
When it came to defending the target, Sydney Sixers started off brilliantly by removing the openers Joe Clarke and Nic Maddinson for 6 runs each.
The No.3 batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk brought out his best in the match and showcased a batting masterclass. He launched an attack on the Sydney bowlers and smashed an outstanding 48 runs off 24 balls, with 5 fours and 3 sixes.
Aaron Finch also tried to contribute during the run-chase, but he just couldn’t get going and was back in the dugout after scoring 33 runs off 31 balls.
In the end, Will Sutherland showed a good fight and chipped in with 51 runs off 30 balls, with 1 four and 4 sixes, but wasn’t able to help his team win.
For Sydney Sixers, Ben Dwarshuis finished as the top wicket-taker as he picked up 3 wickets. Also, Jackson Bird, Sean Abbott, and Steve O’Keefe bagged one wicket each. Also, the Sixers won the match by 8 runs to start their campaign on a high.
