Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed the appointment of former South African all-rounder, Albie Morkel, as the power-hitting batting coach for the upcoming ODI series against the Proteas.

Morkel will join fellow countryman, Allan Donald, who recently joined as the pace bowling coach. It will be the first instance where the Bangladesh cricket team will be seen with a power-hitting coach, something that has been seen as a weakness in Bangladesh’s limited-overs squad.

Confirming the appointment, BCB cricket operation chairman, Jalal Yunus, stated that Morkel has already begun working with the ODI squad. “He is a very experienced campaigner and we feel that our batters will be helped with his coaching,” Yunus mentioned.

Meanwhile, Shakib al Hasan will be part of the squad after much-ado about his availability. The BCB announced that he will be on a break until April 30 only to retract their statement and confirm that Shakib will be touring after all.

I have spoken with Papon Bhai and we could do the plan for the whole year. I will be available in all three formats and the board will decide when to give me rest. I am available for the South Africa series.”

Now I’m in a better situation (mentally). After going to South Africa, I may get better. It happens sometimes when you go to a better environment you feel good,” Shakib had told reporters recently.

Upon landing in South Africa, the Bangladesh team will not have to serve their quarantine period and can begin training on March 14 itself.
