Former India captain Mithali Raj welcomed the decision, saying: “This is a historic decision for women’s cricket in India! The pay equity policy along with the WIPL next year, we are ushering into a new era for women’s cricket in India. Thank you Jay Shah Sir and the BCCI for making this happen. Really happy today.”
Women’s Indian Premier League To Debut in 2023
The BCCI is apparently contemplating a five-team competition, and while it was first learned that the current IPL teams would be granted first refusal, it is now thought that the BCCI aims to hold an auction for its five official franchises.
The Women’s IPL (WIPL), a 22-match tournament with five teams, will debut in March 2023, fueled by the expanding market for women’s cricket in India and the national team’s improved play (they ended as finalists in the 2017 ODI World Cup and the 2020 T20 World Cup).
