The coaching staff of Team India led by Gautam Gambhir is set to be bolstered as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking for a new addition to the set-up. An official announcement is yet to be made but the board has already started internal discussions on it.

The reports have confirmed that the new support staff is more likely to be in the form of a batting coach. Currently, Team India has a coach for every department except batting. Morne Morkel is the bowling coach while T Dilip is the team's fielding coach.

Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate are the two assistant coaches in the team while Gautam Gambhir is the head coach. Gautam Gambhir is under immense pressure after India's dismal performance in Australia in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

According to Cricbuzz, the BCCI has also picked a few names which include prolific domestic players but a final decision is yet to be made. The BCCI can decide on it in the upcoming days and the new member of the coaching staff can start his tenure from the Test series against England in June.

While the players are under pressure after the performance in Australia, the Indian coaching staff has also faced criticism with the head coach Gautam Gambhir being targeted the most.

It is believed that the role and functioning of the support staff was questioned during the recent meeting of the chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma along with the top BCCI officials on January 11.

The poor form of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in BGT 2024-25

Senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli endured a highly disappointing run throughout the series which later cost the team. Kohli's identical mode of dismissals further raises the need for a batting coach in the support staff.

Virat Kohli was out off his outside edge being caught behind the wickets on all the eight times he was dismissed in the series. The 36-year-old veteran was unable to counter his weakness and had no answers to the Australian bowling attack.

Rohit Sharma too wasn't at his best and looked highly under-confident. His returns were so low that he had to drop himself from the last Test match played in Sydney. While Kohli scored 190 runs in five Tests at an average of 23.75, Rohit aggregated just 31 runs in three Tests at an average of 6.20.

The BCCI is looking to fulfill the coaching staff with some productive additions. The board feels that the coaching staff needs some fresh additions. While it is not yet confirmed that the board will go ahead with its decision, they are likely to bolster the coaching staff in terms of batting.

India's upcoming assignments

India's upcoming assignment is the Champions Trophy 2025 which will be played from February 19 at March 9. The players will get involved in the IPL season afterwards which will go on for two months.

The Men in Blue will then travel to England in June for an important Test series marking the start of a new World Test Championship cycle. It is likely that the new member of the coaching staff will make his first appearance in that series.
