The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have had a review meeting on Thursday. This was a high-profile meeting attended by the Team India ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, secretary Devajit Saikia, and the other selectors as well. However, after the meeting, Devajit Saikia provided an update on Rohit Sharma’s future.
The India National Cricket Team have had some hiccups across formats, and for the same, the meeting was held, as both captains across the formats were present in the meeting. It was to evaluate recent team results and map out the strategy leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, as India’s ODI form have been a concern for them.
Devajit Saikia provides update on Rohit Sharma
While speaking to the media, Devajit Saikia provided an update on Rohit Sharma’s future. There have been rumours about whether the former India captain will feature in the forthcoming ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, or whether he will be forced to retire given his age. Saikia stated that Rohit has been in sensational form and there is no need for rumours.
Saikia said (as quoted by Rasesh Mandani), "Rohit Sharma is playing superbly. No need to give fodder to speculations."
Rohit Sharma's recent form
Rohit Sharma’s future has been one of the most talked-about things in the cricket fraternity. He lost roughly 11 kilograms over a three-to-four-month period to get in peak shape for international cricket and play the ODI World Cup 2027. He was in sensational form last year in December against Australia and earlier this year against South Africa.
After that, in the New Zealand series, he struggled a bit, and then, following that, in the Afghanistan series, he came back well and played a knock of 79 runs in the third ODI and, before that, scored 48 runs. Later on in England, he got starts but failed to convert them. However, in the third and final ODI at Lord’s, a vintage Rohit was seen scoring 138 runs.
Why was Ajit Agarkar absent from the BCCI meeting?
Head coach Gautam Gambhir and CoE head VVS Laxman were also present. In a turn of events, chief selector Ajit Agarkar was not present in the meeting, nor did he join online on a video call, as it is believed that he has been out of Mumbai due to personal work and thus could not attend the meeting.
The absence of Ajit Agarkar comes as a shocker tenure is set to end in September, and he has not been given any kind of extension as of now. As per the BCCI rules, senior selectors are eligible to serve up to four years. Apart from that, the BCCI secretary provided an update that there will be no Director of Cricket post VVS Laxman.
India will be facing Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series, after which they will take on West Indies in a full white-ball series with three ODIs followed by the 5-T20Is. Before they travel to New Zealand for a full tour of ODIs, T20Is, and Test cricket.
