The BCCI has reportedly offered an extension to Rahul Dravid as the head coach of Team India. The former India skipper’s contract as the head coach came to an end after the conclusion of the ICC World Cup 2023 earlier this month.
In 2021, Rahul Dravid had replaced Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the team and was given a two-year contract by the BCCI. During his tenure, Team India claimed that number one rank in both Tests and ODIs. They also won the Asia Cup and beat Australia in the Test series at home.
India also suffered some unexpected results during this phase. They lost the Test and ODI series in South Africa and also suffered a shock ODI series defeat in Bangladesh. Last year, the Men in Blue bowed out of the T20 World Cup with a 10-wicket defeat in the semifinal against eventual winners England before losing the WTC final against Australia earlier this year.
As Team India were struggling for consistency, reports suggested that BCCI was unlikely to extend Rahul Dravid’s stint. However, the situation has changed after Team India’s stunning performance in the World Cup. India displayed a highly entertaining and aggressive brand of cricket and won ten games in a row to make it to the final for the first time since 2011.
Rahul Dravid offered extension by BCCI:
According to ESPNcricinfo, the BCCI is keen to extend Rahul Dravid’s contract in order to ensure continuity. The report stated that the board approached the India legend last week. In case the former batsman accepts the offer, his first assignment will be the challenging tour of South Africa.
India are scheduled to play three T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests in South Africa. If Rahul Dravid continues, it is also expected that he will retain the same set of assistant coaches he had joined hands with in 2021: Vikram Rathour (batting coach), Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach), and T Dilip (fielding coach).
Meanwhile, recent reports have suggested that Rahul Dravid is not keen to continue as the head coach in order to stay close to his family. Media reports have suggested that he is also in talks with two IPL franchises for a coaching role.
