The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has planned to offer contracts to pace and spin bowlers apart from the ones who already have central contracts with the Indian board.
Media reports suggest that the Indian board is considering handing contracts to 10 pacers and spinners each in both men and women’s cricket teams.
Contracted bowlers will be groomed at the NCA
These contracted players will be trained and groomed at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The plan will be implemented by selectors at both senior and junior levels, NCA head VVS Laxman and NCA bowling coach Troy Cooley. The job of both the selection committees is to hunt talent and suggest names to the NCA.
The NCA will monitor the growth of these players: BCCI
According to a report by the Times of India, there won’t be age restrictions for these pace and spin bowlers and those selected could be paid INR 50 lakh annually.
“The NCA will monitor the growth of these players and chart their career paths. There are plans to include all-rounders and wicket keepers in the future too,” a BCCI source told Times of India.
“The idea is to give them competitive matches. The new NCA can have zonal tournaments. These contracted players could also be lodged at the premises,” the source further mentioned.
Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Shardul Thakur Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini are the centrally contracted pace bowlers with the BCCI and their contracts will expire in April.
Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar are part of the spin bowlers in the previous national contract list. The new contract list is likely to be announced in April.
