Even though the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is far away, the tournament has been in a lot of talks for now. The preparations for the event are all set to take place in the next couple of months but before that, there have been some major talking points.

The Indian Premier League 2025 is all set to have the mega auction ahead of the 18th edition of the league. But there isn’t clarity that a big auction will take place as some of the franchise owners have expressed their disappointment over the same.

On 31st July, the franchise owners along with the Board of Control for Cricket in India had a meeting ahead of the Indian Premier League 2025 related to the things that should be there and that shouldn’t be there for the Indian Premier League 2025. The meeting lasted quite long but BCCI didn’t come up with any decisions.

As per the reports, franchise owners and BCCI had debates and discussions related to retention policies, and the Impact Player rule. The major talking point was the mega auction ahead of the Indian Premier League 2025.

The majority of the franchise owners were on the same page as they stated that they needed a bit of stability in the team and wanted rewards for scouting and backing young players who went on to become superstars. On the other hand, some franchises including RCB and PBKS wanted big auctions so that they acquire fresh players.

Following the meeting, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) came up with an official statement. The governing body highlighted that they had a 'productive dialogue' with team owners and they will be discussing things with the IPL governing council before taking the final call.

Since then there hasn’t been any official statement by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The auction usually takes place in November-December as has been the case for the past few years. Therefore the governing body still has some time to think about it and make any decision.

IPL 2025 to have a mega auction

In what has been the latest development as per the reports in Cricbuzz, it is learned that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is keen to have a mega auction for Indian Premier League 2025 and beyond. Despite some franchises not being interested in it, the governing body wants to go as per their plans.

The reports suggested that BCCI will be allowing franchises to retain 6 players ahead of the IPL auction. This might come in combination with the Right to Match (RTM) options this time around.

During the IPL 2022, there were no Right to Match (RTM) options. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) allowed only four retentions. It remains to be seen what will be the criteria for the auction ahead of the IPL 2025 and how many players the governing body will allow franchises to retain.
