The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) responded to allegations of bias over the allotment of venues for the ICC World Cup 2023, which is set to be played at home. The Indian Cricket Board denied allegations of political interference in the selection process for World Cup venues.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) released a schedule for the 13th edition of the tournament on Tuesday, June 27. A total of 48 World Cup matches will be played across 10 venues in India. However, the Punjab Cricket Association’s IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali wasn’t included in the list.

Punjab Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer said that the stadium in Mohali was excluded from the venues list due to political interference.
“The exclusion of Punjab’s Mohali from the list of host cities for the tournament was due to political interference. Punjab government will raise this issue with BCCI,” Hayer had said.

They Would Have Got A World Cup Match – BCCI VP Rajeev Shukla
BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla has provided an explanation for why Mohali was not included as a host for any matches in the World Cup.
“Virat Kohli’s 100th Test last year was given to Mohali. Mullanpur Stadium is getting ready in Mohali. Had it been ready, they would have got a World Cup match. The current stadium in Mohali did not meet the standards of ICC and hence was denied matches,” BCCI VP Shukla said.
“But that does not matches would not be given to them. Bilateral series matches will be given to them, it is based on a rotational system. No ‘pick and choosing’ has been done. ICC’s consent is important in finalising the venues,” he added.
Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune will host World Cup fixtures. Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram, and Hyderabad will host warm-up games from September 29 to October 3.
Uttar Pradesh Never Got A Chance – BCCI VP Rajeev Shukla
BCCI Vice-President, Rajeev Shukla has stated that Lucknow and Guwahati were prioritized as host cities for the World Cup match because they had not previously hosted the tournament.
“Lucknow has been added. Uttar Pradesh never got a chance to host a World Cup match. Guwahati has been given a chance. Many venues from the South have been added,” he further stated.

“A fair amount of consideration was given before venues were finalized. ICC has to approve these venues. It is not purely in our hands. All those raising objections should realize that we need consent from ICC to pick up these venues,” he concluded.
India will host the ODI World Cup for the fourth time. They previously co-hosted the 1987, 1996, and 2011 editions. The first and second semi-final matches will be held in Mumbai and Kolkata, respectively, while the final match will be played in Ahmedabad.
