However, this win remains a consolation victory for the team that has already been eliminated from the race to the playoffs.

Why has Kieron Pollard been fined in the PBKS vs MI clash?
Despite having registered another promising win while chasing a 200+ total in IPL 2026, the BCCI has slapped Mumbai Indians batting coach Kieron Pollard with a massive 15% fine of his match fees, besides handing him a demerit point.
Kieron Pollard was said to have breached Level 1 of the IPL's code of conduct during his team's fourth victory of the season. “Pollard was found to have breached article 2.3 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which relates to ‘use of an audible obscenity during a match’," read a BCCI statement on Friday.
This incident happened during the 19th over of MI's chase when Kieron Pollard abused the fourth umpire. He admitted to the offence and accepted the sanctions imposed by match referee Pankaj Dharmani.
Jasprit Bumrah wins first-ever match as MI captain
Jasprit Bumrah, the legendary Indian paceman, was handed the captaincy on the Mumbai Indians side for the first time after Suryakumar Yadav was also dropped from the side after repeated poor performances this season.
Having captained for the first time, the MI veteran led them to a win. He might be seen in a captain's role after Hardik Pandya is snubbed from captaincy in the upcoming seasons. Bumrah, once again, was wicketless in the match, while catches were dropped off his bowling.
However, Tilak Varma's stellar innings with the bat and Will Jacks's promising cameo at the end helped MI clinch their eighth 200+ chase in IPL history.
PBKS have faced a massive dent in their race to the IPL 2026 playoffs
Despite having been eliminated from the race to the IPL 2026 playoffs, MI are now aiming to finish a little higher in the points table than those bottom two positions. On Thursday, Punjab Kings lost their fifth consecutive match in the season.
This current phase in the IPL for the Punjab Kings started after they ended their seven-match undefeated streak in this IPL. Since then, they are currently placed fourth with just 13 points. They can now seal a spot in the playoffs based on their performance in the two upcoming games.
A defeat in either of the two upcoming games, which are scheduled to be played against the likes of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Lucknow Super Giants, might eliminate them from the race to the playoffs.
