The former Indian pacer became the chairman of the senior selection committee in 2023 and has completed three years in the position. His current tenure is set to end in September.

However, the BCCI review will now decide Ajit Agarkar’s future as India’s chief selector. As reported by The Indian Express, the BCCI officials are all set to meet after the end of the Sri Lanka tour to discuss Agarkar's and Rohit Sharma’s future in the international arena.
The selectors had reportedly told Rohit that they are planning a future without him in the ODI team after the England tour. But the former India captain wanted to continue playing ODI cricket.
The selectors wanted to try out young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal as India look to build a strong squad for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. But the real tension exploded after reports suggested that the Lord’s ODI against England could be Rohit’s final match for India.
Amid those rumors, the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia made it clear that Rohit could continue playing for India as long as he remained part of the team’s plans. This reportedly left the selection committee disappointed. But Rohit proved he still had plenty to offer with a stunning century at Lord’s.

Rohit had a serious discussion with the BCCI officials during the England series and made it clear that he wants to continue playing ODI cricket to play 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.

Presently, the BCCI has not taken any decision on Ajit Agarkar’s future as the chief selector. His extension is a 50-50 situation because of India’s success in white-ball cricket, but the team also struggled badly in Test cricket during his three-year-long tenure.
The Men in Blue have enjoyed success in three straight ICC events, winning the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the ICC Champions Trophy along with the Asia Cup, but at the same time, they were whitewashed by New Zealand and South Africa in home Test series.
But the reported disagreement over Rohit could cost Agarkar the possibility of getting the extension as the chief selector. So, the BCCI’s meeting after the Sri Lanka tour would be really important for both Rohit and Agarkar.
